Remember that guy that had more front Unity front covers than anyone ever? (this might not be a fact) The dude who floated flat 3s with a steez like no one else? Guy Crawford was a pillar of the UK scene for a long time before disappearing across the pond. Kingdom caught up with Guy in our first, ‘Where in the World is’ feature. (we’re working on a catchier name, email suggestions please.)
Where in the world are you Guy Crawford?
Living in an apartment in downtown Toronto, Canada with my wife Julie and two kittens, Gatsby and Yarn.

What made you move to Canada?
I met Julie while visiting Kevin Chow (a rollerblading friend) and immediately knew she was “The One”… Air quotes suck, but she deserves them. After extending my return flight a week, I flew back to the UK, saved up for two months, quit my job and moved to Toronto to live with her. We got married in March this year.
Any glaring differences between the Canadian scene and the UK scene?
The Canadian scene is a lot smaller than the UK and with less representation, despite it being the second largest country in the world and having the USA as their nearest neighbours. There are two skateshops to cover all of the country, and neither of them are based in Toronto. As a result, those of us who do skate are dedicated, don’t give a shit about recognition and are generally older- our group of skaters downtown are all between 24 and 30. This means less competition, more socialising. Also, Canada has no chavs -they simply don’t exist as a species- so we’re free to roam as we please. There is a lot of street to skate, and with Canada being a fairly new country most of it is perfect. In contrast to the English Drizzle, we get four months of knee deep snow in Toronto, so we snowboard or skate our indoor vert in the winter.

What do you miss most about the UK?
Until recently, a good cider was the only thing missing! Then last week I found Stowford Press in our local off-licence, so other than missing my friends and family, I honestly don’t miss it, just some of the people. Ah, not true! I miss the suspension bridge in Bristol. Don’t you get sick of paying through the nose for everything and being surrounded by such a selfish society? People are actually nice to each other here : )
Favourite Canadian bladers?
My local gents- Dave Ghent, Taylor Ritchie, Kevin Chow, Dan Lefebre, the Aarons and Erik Burrow are the skaters I rate from Toronto; grownups who’ve been skating long enough to have developed style and personality in their skating. From elsewhere in Canada I love watching Leon Basin and AJ Delong from Vancouver skate, Mike David from Simcoe is a badass and Stephane Julien from Montreal (stunt double for the film 300) is one of the happiest, funnest rollers I’ve met to skate with, a self-professed park rat. I’m lucky have such a great group of friends to skate with.
Favourite British bladers?
That’s a tough question because there are so many and I’m out of touch! Matt Woods is insanely talented and a great friend. I’ve seen great potential from Dan Ives and would love to see him deliver on that. Its great to see Chaz continuing along his path and I look forward to watching him progress! I miss Jake Eley, Senór Coyne and Joby. The Bristol scene will always be something I look back on happily. Andreas Larfors is awesome at rollerblading, Matt Smith is the second coming. Shit! Hard question. Sean Escott and Frey are so good to watch skating. Ummm, who else? Jon Hubbard! Is this a popularity contest? These are people I find interesting to watch and that’s all I can think of right now. Apologies to the glaringly obvious omissions.

Plans for the next few years?
Enjoying my new life with my wife. We’re planning to have kids fairly soon, so just getting on with everything : ) Career, house, skating, fatherhood… There’ll definitely be trips back to the UK in there. We set up a blog (www.rolltoronto.ca) so you can keep up to speed with our back royales and holiday photos there. Hugs to all my friends in the UK, I miss you guys, come visit!
